When developing AI for humanitarian contexts, design approach matters. User-centered design creates solutions for users through consultation and feedback, but designers retain final decision-making authority. Co-design creates solutions with affected communities as equal partners throughout development, implementation and governance.

This factsheet from the SAFE AI Project is a clear and brief practical guidance for humanitarians working with AI to understand the two different approaches to participation in AI development.

*Please note: This is a beta version of this product - we want to know what you think. Given the emerging and innovative nature of AI in the humanitarian sector, if you have any insights, reflections or feedback that can feed into any of our beta products, email info@cdacnetwork.org.
